# Why I Built an AI That Lives in Your Pocket, Available Anywhere, Anytime, and Works Offline *The future of AI is not bigger. The tools that run our lives should belong to the people who use them, not to the handful of companies that sit between us and everything we want to do. I have written about free networks, about taking the middlemen out of systems that never needed them, and about peer to peer technology that lets people connect directly without a gatekeeper standing in the way. I have argued that the internet, now past fifty years old, deserves a new economic model. I have made the case that artificial intelligence, decentralized money, and shared networks were quietly converging into something far larger than any one of them on its own. It drafts your emails, reads your calendar, and searches your photos without ever uploading a single one of them. It uses roughly the energy of one phone charge rather than the power and water a data center spends on every prompt. And because it runs on hardware you already own, it is free to use, with no per question meter. One nuance matters, and I want to be precise about it. The Turtle is local first, not local only. You can still reach for the cloud when a task genuinely calls for it and you choose to. The difference is that the default keeps your life on your device, and the choice stays with you. **What local AI unlocks for you: performance + privacy** -------------------------------------------------------- Have you ever been talking to your AI in the car and hit a dead spot in the cell network, only to have the conversation grind to a halt and the AI become confused? When AI is running locally, this doesn’t happen, and responses are nearly instantaneous. That changes the tenor of conversations entirely. It also means that for the most critical conversations you might have at a doctor’s office or when you’re trying to make a fast decision, you get a fast response.
